The Russian high-thrust engine PD-35 can benefit from new manufacturing technologies. The Center for Additive Technologies (CAT) of the United Engine Corporation presented approaches that allow creating lighter and more efficient parts for gas turbine engines.
Thanks to the topological optimization method, engineers do not adapt a ready-made part for production, but recalculate its shape from scratch — taking into account real loads and functions.
A competent choice of tools and control methods at the start of work directly determines the quality of the result and the economics of the entire process.
In one of the practical examples, experts showed that this approach allows reducing the mass of the structure by up to 20% while maintaining strength characteristics.
UEC noted that the PD-35 has already received more than 2,300 parts manufactured using additive technologies.
