Specialists from the Ural Scientific Research Institute of Composite Materials have developed an improved technology for manufacturing products from ultra-strong silicon carbide-based ceramics. Such parts are used in oil production and refining, where equipment operates in extreme conditions – at high temperatures, pressures, and in aggressive environments.
The new method simplifies the process: the blank is formed from a mixture, fired, then impregnated with a melt at a temperature of about 1800°C. The main difference from old methods is that mechanical processing can be carried out before final firing, not after. This allows for the creation of complex-shaped parts and reduces the number of defects.
The technology can be applied to produce composites with additives of titanium, zirconium, or hafnium carbides and borides. The development is intended for the manufacture of equipment operating in the extreme conditions of the oil industry.
