The modernization of the Tu-214 passenger aircraft cockpit for a two-person crew is technically feasible. According to sources of "Kommersant" newspaper, Kazan Aircraft Plant can use the developments of the Tu-204SM project, which was previously developed by Ulyanovsk "Aviastar-SP".

The Tu-204SM received its certificate in 2013, but never went into serial production. However, the aircraft was already created with a modern cockpit at that time, designed for two pilots without the participation of a flight engineer. These solutions can be adapted for the new version of the Tu-214.

The main difficulty of the project is not related to the modernization of the cockpit itself, but to the financing of related changes. The industry notes that it will be necessary to revise the aircraft maintenance system and improve the schedules of routine work to reduce aircraft downtime.

A separate issue remains the training of flight engineers for the operation of the current version of the Tu-214. The training program for specialists has not yet been launched, and funding sources for it have not yet been determined.

The transition of the Tu-214 to a two-person crew is considered a solvable technical task, but for the full launch of the new modification, it will be necessary to agree on the financial model, aircraft maintenance, and personnel training.
