A hybrid robot-assisted operating room has started functioning at the Research Institute of Pulmonology of the FMBA of Russia, the agency's press service reported. In the first few days, thoracic surgeons performed 12 interventions on patients with lung cancer and mediastinal neoplasms, with the surgical field remaining dry – blood loss was practically eliminated.
The robotic system gives the surgeon seven degrees of freedom of movement – more than a human hand. The robot allows movements that a human hand cannot perform.
The 3D camera magnifies the surgical field up to 10 times, making even capillaries visible, and the incision does not exceed a few centimeters.
Minimally invasiveness ensures rapid healing and short rehabilitation. The institute's immediate plans include simultaneous heart and lung surgeries, and in the future – remote surgery with robot control from hundreds of kilometers away. The technology transforms inoperable tumors into routine practice.
