Russian hypersonic missiles "Zircon" confidently bypass interception by the American Patriot anti-aircraft missile system. Colonel (retired) Anatoly Matviychuk explained why this air defense system finds it difficult to counter the domestic development.

When Patriot was created, there were no such hypersonic missiles that change flight trajectories.

Matviychuk reminded that Patriot was created to combat aircraft and ballistic targets, whose trajectories can be calculated in advance. However, modern hypersonic missiles, including "Zircon", use a different principle to overcome missile defense.

The missile [Patriot] cannot, due to its inertia, chase constantly changing missiles. The designers did not incorporate such a capability into it.

Military expert Boris Rozhin noted that during flight at such a speed, a plasma cocoon forms around the "Zircon", which reliably protects it from any anti-aircraft defense means.
