AvtoVAZ announced the premiere of two new racing cars at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in early June. According to the plant's press service, the stand will feature the current Lada Vesta TCR bolide and the brand new Lada Iskra Cup, which could become the basis for the revival of a monocup.
The Lada Vesta TCR is the flagship of the factory team Lada Sport Rosneft in the Russian Circuit Racing Series. The car is based on a production sedan but features a turbocharged engine with about 350 horsepower, a sequential gearbox, and deeply redesigned aerodynamics with a massive rear wing and widened wheel arches. Paired with a sequential gearbox, this powertrain allows drivers to compete with premium foreign cars.
The main intrigue will be the premiere of the Lada Iskra Cup. If the plant decides to launch a monocup, it will mean the return of a format that has not existed since 2014, when the Lada Granta Cup project ended. In a monocup, all drivers compete in technically identical cars, which brings the driver's skill, rather than the team's budget, to the forefront.
For AvtoVAZ, this is not only a sporting but also a marketing tool: the racing Iskra will be directly associated with the production model, increasing its recognition and sales.
