The idea of replacing the second pilot in civil aircraft with artificial intelligence could create critical risks for passengers. This was stated to "Pervy Tekhnichesky" by Oleg Smirnov, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Commission of the Public Council of Rostransnadzor.
He reminded that even modern electronics and automation systems are not capable of fully replacing a human in the cockpit. He named the main problem as a situation where the sole pilot loses capacity during the flight.
And what if the pilot feels unwell? Then what will you do? That's it, you're doomed. It's a death sentence for all passengers, for all three hundred people, if there's no replacement.
Smirnov recalled that the system for training aircraft commanders by all airlines worldwide has been built for decades precisely through working as a second pilot.
Several thousand hours in the co-pilot's seat become a "real university," without which it is impossible to train a full-fledged crew commander, he emphasized.
At the same time, not every second pilot is capable of becoming an aircraft commander in the future due to their psychological qualities.
A ship commander is a special category of people. This is elite human material, in a broad sense. Any state considers such specialists a national treasure. Training a ship commander costs millions of dollars.
Earlier it became known that Russia is discussing a gradual transition to operating passenger aircraft with one pilot.
Andrey Popov, a specialist from GosNIIAS in unmanned aerial systems, noted that the modern level of automation allows an aircraft to be flown in autopilot mode.
