Telegram blocked over 100,000 channels and groups in 24 hours

The administration continues mass purges for violating rules

On May 12, Telegram's administration massively blocked channels and groups that violated the platform's rules. According to messenger statistics, almost 101,000 communities worldwide were restricted within 24 hours.

Since the beginning of 2026, Telegram has already blocked almost 15 million channels and groups. In the last 7 days alone, over 556,000 communities have been blocked.

The largest wave of deletions ever recorded occurred on January 1, 2026, when Telegram blocked almost 543,000 channels and groups in one day. Statistics have been maintained since December 2023.

In the first quarter of 2026, Telegram blocked 51% more communities than in the same period last year. By the end of 2025, the volume of blocks increased almost 2.7 times compared to 2024 – to over 44 million channels and groups.

In Russia, pressure from regulators on Telegram continues. Roskomnadzor previously stated that the messenger still does not comply with Russian legislation. In the summer of 2025, the agency restricted calls via Telegram, explaining it as a fight against fraud and cybercrime.

Furthermore, it was reported in February that the Tagansky Court of Moscow's decision to block Telegram from 2018 has formally not yet been overturned.
