Plus 126 megawatts: the second fully domestic turbine unit launched at Smolensk CHPP-2

The total installed electrical capacity of the plant was brought to 316 MW

Modernization has been completed at Smolensk CHPP-2: the plant commissioned a second new turbine unit with a capacity of 126 MW and brought the total installed electrical capacity to 316 MW. The work was carried out by JSC "Rosatom Infrastrukturnye Resheniya" and JSC "Uralsky Turbinny Zavod" with the support of VEB.RF.

The first turbine unit was launched in March 2025, the second in May 2026. Both replaced equipment that had reached the end of its service life. All key components are manufactured in Russia: steam turbines were supplied by Uralsky Turbinny Zavod.

After modernization, the plant became more reliable in providing heat to more than 200 thousand residents of Smolensk and more stable in supplying electricity to the Unified Energy System of the country.

Representatives of the Smolensk Regional Dispatch Control of the UES, the interregional department of Rostekhnadzor, and the management of JSC "RIR Energo" participated in the ceremony of completing the modernization.

Earlier, "Pervy Tekhnichesky" reported that a new 35 MW turbine unit began operation at Krasnoyarsk CHPP-1. The plant, launched in 1943, received modern equipment instead of a turbine unit that had been operating since 1959.
