In Russia, work is underway to create the world's first gene therapy drug capable of slowing aging at the cellular level. It involves targeting the RAGE gene, whose activation is what triggers the aging processes in cells.
The development was described by Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Denis Sekirinsky. According to him, the idea is to suppress the activity of this gene: in that case, cells will be able to maintain a "young" state for longer.
The project is being carried out at the Institute of Aging Biology and Medicine as part of the national project "New Health Preservation Technologies." If the development proves successful, it could become the first in the world in its class.
The technology belongs to the field of gene therapy, one of the most promising approaches in the fight against aging. It targets not the symptoms, but the very mechanism of age-related changes.
The development was announced at a conference in Saransk dedicated to the medicine of healthy longevity. Scientists, doctors, and government representatives are taking part, discussing new methods for preventing age-related diseases and the introduction of advanced technologies into healthcare.
