Russian Replacement for European Azipod Ready: Rudder Propellers for Project 22740M Icebreakers Pass Extreme Tests

New Domestic Thrusters with a Capacity of 2000 kW Withstood 160% of Torque

Factory tests of new rudder propellers for Project 22740M icebreakers have been successfully completed. They were organized by the Konar industrial group at the Stankomash industrial park in Chelyabinsk with the participation of inspectors from the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.

The developed thrusters produce a power of 2000 kW and completely cover the needs of domestic shipyards for analogues of the European Azipod ICE1400 system. They will be installed on Icebreaker6 ice-class icebreakers, which are currently being built at the Onega Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant for FSUE Rosmorport.

The company's press service clarified that engineers prepared design documentation, launched the production of components, and set up test benches from scratch in two years.

RMRS inspectors checked the operation of the submersible rotary electric motor under a load of 160% of the rated torque. This mode simulates ice milling by the hull and propeller. Vibration and bearing temperature control sensors did not exceed the permissible limits.

Components for the columns were manufactured mainly at Konar's own facilities and enterprises of the Stankomash industrial park. The foundry and forging and mechanical workshops shipped hulls, shafts, propellers, and hydraulic systems. The submersible electric motor was produced by the Russkiye Elektricheskiye Dvigateli enterprise, a joint venture with PAO Transneft. A high proportion of domestic parts made it possible to reduce lead times and keep each assembly stage under strict control.
