Russians will be able to see a rare celestial phenomenon today: The Moon will cover the Pleiades

An impressive "disappearance" of stars will unfold in the sky tonight

Residents of the European part of Russia have been warned about an unusual astronomical phenomenon — the occultation of the Pleiades by the Moon. This was announced by Vitaly Frantsev, a lecturer at the Perm Planetarium.

This phenomenon can be observed in the evening of April 19 — around 20:00 Moscow time. It is recommended to use binoculars or a telescope to see the details.

According to the astronomer, the moving disk of the Moon will alternately hide the stars in the Pleiades M45 cluster — one by one they will disappear behind its edge.

The Pleiades are a well-known cluster of stars, the brightest of which were named after nymphs from ancient Greek mythology.

Earlier, Alexander Alekseev, a researcher at the physical and astronomical department of the Tsiolkovsky State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics, noted that in May 2026 it will be possible to see two full moons at once — this phenomenon occurs once every few years.
