For the sake of import substitution: Rostec to launch Europe's largest radiopharmaceutical plant for cancer treatment

Production of isotope products for the treatment of cancer and other diseases is being created in Obninsk

Europe's largest radiopharmaceutical production plant is being created in Obninsk at the Karpov NIFHI. The first lines will be launched at the end of 2026. Two lines for the production of actinium-225 and radium-223 based drugs have now been installed - they are being prepared for commissioning. The company will be fully operational by the end of 2028.

In total, 16 technological and one RND line will be installed, as well as laboratories, a vial line for packaging and a radioactive waste disposal system. Rosatom and the Ministry of Health have prepared a program to meet the country's needs for isotope products until 2030. With the launch of the plant, about 20 more types of products will appear for the domestic market and export to the CIS, BRICS, Asia and Africa.

Imported French, Polish and German drugs have already been replaced. New products include iodine-131 for the treatment of thyroid cancer, actinium-225 and lutetium-177 for the treatment of prostate cancer, samarium-153 and radium-223 for bone metastases, and technetium-99m generators for diagnostics.
