Russia is creating an engine that has never existed before - it will open a new class of rockets

ODK engineers in the development of the NK-3 borrowed the steering unit chambers from the serial RD-107A

Russia has begun to make an engine for super-light space rockets — this class of power plants has never existed in the country before. The NK-3 project should close this niche, the United Engine Corporation (ODK) said.

The new engine is being designed from scratch, using individual solutions from already serial products. In particular, the chamber is being created on the basis of elements of the RD-107A engine, said Mikhail Remizov, Deputy General Director of ODK for Strategy.

The remaining components and parts are designed from scratch. The new engine will use, among other things, modern technologies.

The corporation's press service added that the preliminary design was completed in 2025, and the stage of developing working design documentation has begun.

It should be reminded that NK-3 is intended for the super-light Voronezh rocket 20 m long and 2 m in diameter. It runs on liquid fuel and can put up to 400 kg of cargo into orbit at 500 km, the Skolkovo Foundation noted.
