Russian Military Masters Cheap Way to Combat Long-Range Drones

Units jointly use "Molniya-PVO" interceptors and mobile radar stations

The Russian army is mastering an effective and cheap way to counter aircraft-type drones. For this purpose, special new units have been allocated in the troops, which combine mobile radar stations (RLS) and "Molniya-PVO" drones.

Formations can quickly block routes along which air raids are carried out. Each unit consists of two groups — mobile crews operate Molniya-PVO anti-aircraft drones, and radar operators are responsible for detecting and tracking aerial targets.

Detection stations will significantly expand the capabilities for controlling airspace, increasing the viewing area and the range of effective use, explained military expert Alexei Leonkov.

The mobility of radar stations will allow, if necessary, to quickly change the location, promptly and effectively respond to emerging threats from the air.

The key advantage of "Molniya-PVO" is cost-effectiveness. The cost of interceptors is significantly lower than that of classic anti-aircraft missiles, which reduces the cost of destroying drones.

The Ministry of Defense noted that the "Molniya-PVO" crew successfully intercepts and destroys even heavy drones. The interceptor accelerates to 220 km/h.
