Sechenov University developed a set of components for a solution that protects the heart during surgery

All ingredients are of domestic production, and their exact proportions have already been calculated in advance

Sechenov University has developed a ready-made set of components for a solution that is used during open-heart surgery to protect the heart muscle and maintain its function. The university's press service told "Perviy Tekhnicheskiy" about this.

The method is used to preserve the heart during surgery. The crystalloid solution consists of several components, which are mixed with the patient's blood in certain proportions before being introduced into the coronary vessels. This ensures oxygen delivery, prevents ischemia, and facilitates heart recovery after surgery.

Previously, doctors mixed the components of the solution with the patient's blood themselves each time, calculating the proportions. To simplify this process, the Clinic of Cardiovascular Surgery at Sechenov University created a ready-made "turnkey" kit.

We have collected all the pharmacological ingredients in precisely calibrated proportions in one package. Such a set is called a "soup set" in the professional environment. The perfusionist only needs to open the package, mix the contents and add the patient's own blood - a safe, balanced solution for reliable heart protection during surgery is ready.

All components of the kit are of Russian production. According to the developer, this is the contribution of cardiac surgeons to the import substitution program.

The kit also allows standardizing the solution preparation process. It eliminates the variability of component proportions, minimizes the risk of medical error, and saves the operating team time.

An incorrectly selected ratio of active substances in cardioplegia can lead, at best, to a delay in the restoration of cardiac activity at the end of the operation, at worst, to false well-being, when the myocardium is visually relaxed, but completely devoid of all nutrients, Sechenov University explained.

The development has passed preclinical trials. The team plans to conduct clinical trials and search for an industrial partner to launch mass production.
