ChMK starts supplying "velvet" 100-meter rails for Russian Railways

Products of this length significantly reduce wheelset wear, reduce noise, and allow trains to gain more speed

Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant (ChMK, part of the Mechel Group) has launched the supply of 100-meter railway rails to the Volga Federal District. Shipments are made under a contract with Russian Railways.

By the end of 2026, the plant will supply 174 thousand tons of rail products. The volume will include differentially heat-strengthened R65 rails with a length of 25 and 100 meters. The products are intended for areas with high loads, as well as for high-speed and combined traffic lines.

In addition, the plant will ship OR65 switch rails - switch plants will assemble turnouts from them.

The first batches under the agreement were sent in February. Then 25-meter rails of DT 350 R65 and NT260 R65 grades were sent.

Special emphasis is placed on 100-meter rails. They are used for seamless track, which is also called "velvet". This laying provides a smooth ride, significantly reduces wheel and rail wear, reduces noise and allows trains to gain more speed.
