Home internet started to be restricted: speed is cut for excessive traffic

When exceeding 3 TB per month, access is reduced to 50 Mbps - the FAS will check the validity of such measures

Fixed-line providers have faced a sharp increase in network load due to the flow of users from mobile internet to wired, reports «Rossiyskaya Gazeta». In response, «Dom.ru» (part of «ER-Telecom») launched testing of tariffs in three cities with speed limits for those who consume traffic excessively.

The mechanics are similar to cellular tariffs, but with different numbers: when exceeding 3 terabytes per month, the access speed is reduced to 50 Mbps. The pilot affected subscribers in St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, and Samara. According to the operator's estimates, less than 1% of users may be subject to restrictions — 85% of clients spend up to 500 GB per month.

The press service of «ER-Telecom» explained that excessive consumption is most often associated not with personal needs, but with commercial use of home internet. The user can restore the speed for an additional fee or wait for the next billing period.

The Federal Antimonopoly Service intends to check how economically and technologically justified this practice is, and whether it complies with the law.
