MWM: India to Purchase Russian R-37M Missiles to Strengthen Air Force

The missiles will increase the firing range of the Su-30MKI and help against Pakistani J-10Cs

Military Watch Magazine reports India's intention to acquire a large batch of Russian air-to-air missiles of the R-37M type. The plan is to purchase several hundred of these missiles, which will significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the national aircraft fleet.

According to MWM, the plans were influenced by the experience of aerial combat with Pakistan. In May 2025, clashes occurred where Indian Su-30MKIs and French Rafales were inferior to Chinese J-10C fighters, which are in service with the Pakistani Air Force. To correct the imbalance, New Delhi decided to increase the engagement range of its aircraft.

When installed on the Su-30 and Su-35, the R-37M missile can only be launched from lower speeds and altitudes, so its range is limited to approximately 350 kilometers. This will allow Su-30MKI fighters to shoot down Pakistani targets, in particular, expensive long-range radar detection and control aircraft, while remaining far beyond the reach of escort fighters.

The authors of the publication drew attention to the uniqueness of such long range. They reported that apart from the Chinese PL-17 missile, which is only in service in China, no country has systems with similar or greater range. Thus, the purchase of the R-37M will set India apart from other military departments.

Military Watch Magazine suggests that the new missiles may be needed not only for Su-30MKI aircraft. Negotiations are underway to purchase fifth-generation Su-57 fighters. There is a possibility that the R-37M will also be integrated into these machines if the deal takes place. This will allow India to control airspace over long distances.
