Kazakhstan Introduces Mirror Duties on Cars from Russia

The country's authorities claim that there will be no sharp price increase

Kazakhstan authorities intend to increase the recycling fee for cars imported from Russia in order to protect their own automotive industry. This was announced by the Minister of Industry and Construction, Yersaiyn Nagaspayev.

We are not introducing any innovations for the Russian market, we are simply mirroring the situation. This is necessary to protect the domestic automotive industry.
Yersaiyn Nagaspayev, Minister of Industry and Construction of Kazakhstan

The official recalled that Russia had previously increased the recycling fee for Kazakhstani cars several times, and the rate will increase annually on a progressive scale. The draft order provides for the application of a coefficient of 2 to the collection rate for cars and self-propelled agricultural machinery from Russia and Belarus.

According to Nagaspayev, the document has not yet been signed, but a sharp increase in car prices is not expected after it comes into force, since not so many cars from the Russian Federation enter Kazakhstan. The amendments are aimed at eliminating regulatory imbalances, harmonizing with the EAEU norms and protecting national interests.
