Two special Il-76TD aircraft of the Ministry of the Russian Federation for Civil Defence, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters successfully completed an intercontinental humanitarian mission, delivering 60 tons of food supplies to Madagascar.
As flight monitoring data showed, the aircraft followed an optimized route with intermediate landings in Riyadh and Djibouti — this made it possible to cover a considerable distance at full load.
The press service of EMERCOM reported that the operation was carried out strictly on the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin and on the orders of EMERCOM Minister Aleksandr Kurenkov.
Russian rescuers handed over food products to the local authorities (including rice, beans, and sunflower oil) for distribution among the population affected by the devastating Tropical Cyclone Gezani.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed condolences to Madagascar's leader Mikael Ranatrinirina in connection with two cyclones that affected more than 270 thousand people and killed more than 40.
