The new Russian multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) "Sarma" has become an effective response to the American HIMARS system. This was stated by the head of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies (CAST), Ruslan Pukhov.
He recalled that Rostec created "Sarma" in just three years, while the MLRS weighs less than "Tornado-S" and "Smerch".
Obviously, the development of "Sarma" by our specialists was in one way or another prompted by the American HIMARS MLRS. The new vehicle can be called an effective response to the Americans.
Pukhov explained that "Sarma" meets the trend of transforming artillery into high-precision weapons. The main thing now is to provide the troops with a sufficient number of both installations and guided missiles, the head of CAST concluded.
"Sarma" has a caliber of 300 mm, but half the number of guides as the "Tornado-S" and "Smerch" - 6 instead of 12. Thanks to this solution, the weight of the vehicle has decreased, and the cross-country ability and mobility have increased.
