India will need around 200 Russian SJ-100 aircraft and even more Il-114-300s. The initial market estimates were shared by Devasri Kutti Sunil, chairman of the Indian aircraft manufacturing corporation Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
According to him, the country will first take several "Superjets" on lease to become familiar with the servicing, reliability, and ecosystem of the aircraft.
At the same time, we will be building the infrastructure for production. We expect to launch assembly in three years; that is the plan. We see that our country will need about 200 SJ-100 aircraft, and even more Il-114-300s.
The head of the United Aircraft Corporation (OAK), Vadim Badekha, had stated that Russia's example inspired India to develop its own aviation industry and strive for independence from foreign importers.
Russia signed a contract with HAL for the licensed production of the SJ-100, and also signed an agreement with Flamingo Aerospace for the delivery of the first six turboprop Il-114-300 aircraft, with shipments beginning in 2028.
