"Aviastar" to Double the Production Rate of Il-76MD-90A

Ulyanovsk to start delivering 18 aircraft per year from 2028

The production plans of the "Aviastar" aircraft factory in Ulyanovsk include a phased increase in the production of heavy military transport and civilian aircraft Il-76MD-90A.According to published data, it is planned to deliver nine such machines to customers in 2026, 12 in 2027, and from 2028 to 2029, 18 aircraft annually. This rate of production indicates the stabilization of the serial production of one of the key wide-body freighters of the Russian aviation industry.

Although the Il-76 is traditionally associated with military equipment, its civilian use remains in demand. The aircraft is successfully used for transporting oversized and heavy cargo, thanks to its large cargo ramp and the ability to operate from short and unequipped runways. A number of commercial air carriers, including Volga-Dnepr, Alrosa, and Aviakon, actively use the Il-76 in their fleets.

Special importance is attached to the production capabilities of "Aviastar". The enterprise is a full-cycle plant: it not only carries out final assembly, but also manufactures key components and assemblies. In addition to the Il-76MD-90A, the plant is working on the MS-21, Il-114-300 programs, and even components for the Sukhoi Superjet. This contrasts with the approach implemented at other Russian enterprises - for example, in Irkutsk and Komsomolsk-on-Amur, where mainly final assembly of supplied finished components is performed for the MS-21 and Superjet, which resembles the production model of Boeing and Airbus.

As a reminder, at the end of December 2025, the Russian Aerospace Forcesput into operation the seventh serial Il-76MD-90A - this became a new production record for the plant.
