The second magnetic storm since the beginning of 2026 occurred on Earth on the night of January 11

It was a reaction to the arrival of a plasma cloud to our planet

On the night of January 11, the second magnetic storm since the beginning of 2026 occurred on Earth. This was reported by the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the IKI RAS and ISSF SB RAS.

The phenomenon attracted attention with unusually bright auroras, which in some areas dropped to latitudes of about 50 degrees. The most intense phase occurred from 1 to 3 a.m. Moscow time, when activity reached a maximum level of 10 on the intensity scale. Unfavorable weather conditions made it difficult to observe the auroras in many regions.

The magnetic storm was a reaction to a cloud of plasma ejected as a result of weak solar flares in recent days. According to data from orbital satellites, the Earth is still inside this cloud, so so-called "aftershocks" are possible - prolonged fluctuations in the magnetic field.
