Nuclear specialists have shut down power unit No. 2 with an EGP-6 reactor at the Bilibino NPP (Chukotka). It will switch to a mode without electricity generation, the Rosatom press service reported.
The disconnection from the grid and cooling of the reactor units of the other two power units of the Bilibino NPP (No. 3 and No. 4) are scheduled for December 11 and 22.
Power unit No. 1 was shut down back in 2018. Specialists removed spent nuclear fuel (SNF) from the reactor core, moving it to a storage pool.
Subsequent stages of decommissioning the Bilibino NPP:
- removal of SNF to the "Mayak" production association
- removal of working fluids from equipment
- retrofitting of the radioactive waste management system
- decontamination of equipment
- fragmentation of structures and buildings
- rehabilitation of the NPP site
Andrey Kuznetsov, chief engineer of the Bilibino NPP, stated that there is a lot of work ahead. According to him,"the start of full rehabilitation of the site is seen beyond 2054".
