Russian Tire Market Under Threat of Chinese Expansion

Head of Ikon Tyres announces the need to protect the Russian market from cheap Chinese tires

Andrey Pantyukhov, head of Ikon Tyres, is confident in the need to protect Russian tire manufacturers from dumping by Chinese companies, whose expansion he considers the most serious problem in the Russian tire market.

We are working on this now, we will come up with new proposals to the government and the Eurasian Economic Commission for the adoption of protective measures.

According to the head of Ikon Tyres, the capacity of the Russian passenger car tire market reaches about 50 million pieces, while Chinese imports in 2024 amounted to 19 million.

Over five years — from 2019 to 2024 — the share of Chinese brands increased from 11% to 35%, while production at local enterprises decreased.

Supplies from China are carried out at very low prices, which the company considers dumping and "violation of fair competition." According to Ikon Tyres estimates, about 200 Chinese brands are sold in Russia.

The head of Ikon Tyres notes the absence of regulatory restrictions in the industry that could affect the situation.

Importers can issue certificates of compliance based on tests conducted abroad, without additional verification in Russia. At the same time, China has national certification, but Russia does not.
