The lack of external power supply to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) creates a threat to nuclear safety, according to Yuri Chernichuk, director of the Zaporizhzhia NPP.
We are in the mode of providing the station's own needs from our own emergency diesel generators. Naturally, there is some threat to nuclear safety, but I want to say right away that the situation is fully controlled by the personnel at the moment.
He noted that the station's employees have ensured the necessary water supply for cooling in "cold shutdown" mode.
All our units are in a cold state, so for all the functions that are needed now, we are provided with a supply of water at the moment, and for the coming months, even probably a year.
The Zaporizhzhia NPP was switched to backup power from diesel generators on September 23 after the last 750 kV Dneprovskaya external power supply line was damaged as a result of shelling. The station can operate on backup generators for quite a long time, as there are sufficient fuel reserves. There are also options for delivering diesel fuel and spare parts for generators.
