Driver's licenses will be revoked in Russia for medical reasons

The new law will come into force on March 1, 2027, and medical databases are now being combined with the Ministry of Internal Affairs databases

Currently, the Russian Federation is reviewing the rules for annulling driver's licenses when dangerous diseases are detected in their owners, Sergey Leonov, head of the State Duma Committee on Health Protection (LDPR), said in an interview with TASS.

A real-time monitoring system is now being built. That is, medical databases are being combined with the databases of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in accordance with the adopted legislative decisions. As soon as a signal is received that a person is not entitled to a license, the process of annulling the driver's license will be launched in the responsible structures

The main emphasis of the initiative is on the timely identification of contraindications and the prevention of risks associated with deviations in the health of drivers. Prior to the adoption of these amendments, a person could continue to drive a car until the expiration of the driver's license (10 years), even if he or she developed medical contraindications, including mental disorders.

People with mental illnesses or alcohol addiction should not drive. A similar initiative may also affect the rules for owning weapons
