The first two units of the new Kurchatov Nuclear Power Plant (NPP-2) are planned to be launched before 2027. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak. According to him, this will replace power units No. 1 and No. 2 of the existing Kurchatov NPP.
The Deputy Prime Minister said that the new nuclear power plant will operate innovative reactors with improved technical and economic indicators and modern safety systems.
The first two power units of this type will be launched at one of the four largest nuclear power plants in Russia - Kurchatov NPP-2 - before 2027.
According to Novak, the introduction of new technologies at Kurchatov NPP-2 will not only ensure reliable power supply, but also create opportunities for replicating the technologies used, both in Russia and abroad.
Kurchatov NPP, located in Kurchatov, has become one of the largest sources of electricity in the Central Russian Black Earth Region. It supplies electricity to 19 regions of Central Russia and consists of three power units with channel reactors with a total capacity of 3 GW.
Currently, the construction of power units No. 1 and No. 2 of Kurchatov NPP-2 is actively underway, which will be equipped with a new type of VVER-TOI reactor. Their design lifetime is 60 years with the possibility of extension for another 20 years. In 2025, Rostekhnadzor issued a license for the placement of nuclear installations of new power units No. 3 and No. 4.
