Complex technical solutions were implemented during its construction, some of which have no analogues in world shipbuilding.

"Ivan Papanin" combines the properties of a patrol ship, a tugboat and an icebreaker, is capable of monitoring and protecting water resources in the Arctic latitudes, towing and escorting detained vessels to the port, participating in rescue operations and escorting supply vessels.
