In the modern world, attackers often resort to the "brute force" method, known as brute-forcing. This method involves using programs that go through hundreds of thousands of password combinations from dictionaries of the most popular options. This was reported by Alexey Severin, a lecturer at the Department of Information Security at the Bauman Moscow State Technical University.
If your password is 123456 or a relative's name, it will be guessed in seconds.
Phishing, which the expert called a subspecies of social engineering, poses no less of a threat.
In phishing attacks, attackers, disguised as trusted persons or organizations, try to lure users into giving up confidential data, such as passwords, bank card numbers, and personal information. The main tool of phishers is e-mails, messages on social networks, and fake websites that mimic the interfaces of well-known services.
Fraudsters send letters on behalf of banks or services, ask you to follow the link and enter data. Or they call, posing as a security service, and lure the code from SMS.
The interlocutor emphasized that common methods of saving passwords are extremely unsafe. He dispelled the myth about the reliability of writing passwords in a notebook, stating that even storing them in ordinary notes is associated with risks. The specialist also pointed out the vulnerability of cloud services in the absence of proper access rights settings and two-factor authentication. As an effective protection, he advised using password managers, which, according to Severin, encrypt data under a master password and create reliable, random combinations.
