The cost of the 26-year modernization of the heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Project 11442M "Admiral Nakhimov" amounted to 200 billion rubles. The warship has finally gone to sea for sea trials.
Ilya Kramnik, a researcher at the Center for Strategic Planning Studies at IMEMO RAS, praised the capabilities of the modernized cruiser, calling it "probably the strongest missile ship in the world."
The problem is that it is still one of a kind.
The return of the "Admiral Nakhimov" to service does not yet provide an answer to the question of the development strategy of the Russian Navy: whether to maintain the focus on unique Soviet "ships-fortresses" or to opt for a more numerous production of a new generation, Kramnik noted.
There is no dominance of one concept among the top command. Supporters of an alternative approach believe that instead of repairing the "Admiral Nakhimov" and "Peter the Great," four to five new Project 22350 frigates of the "Admiral Gorshkov" type could be built with this money.
Earlier, www1.ru reported that the armament of the updated "Admiral Nakhimov" became known.
