Lockheed Martin F-35A fighters of the Italian Air Force on August 13th, for the first time in the current rotation, took off from the Estonian air base Ämari to intercept Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea, according to the NATO Air Command press service.
According to the department, the Italian F-35s approached Russian Su-33 and Su-24 front-line bombers. At the same time, some industry sources identified the Su-33 as a Su-27.
The NATO Baltic Air Policing mission has been conducted since 2004. However, often the alliance's fighters simply fly out to meet any Russian military aircraft that are traveling from or to the mainland without submitting a flight plan and with the transponder turned on.
