Scientists enriched plants with selenium by adding it to water and fertilizers

Scientists from Novgorod University have developed a bio-yogurt designed to prevent mental retardation and neurodegenerative diseases. This product helps to compensate for the deficiency of selenium and iodine, which play a key role in maintaining brain health.

Russian scientists from the Ministry of Education and Science explain that selenium in the form of amino acids (selenomethionine, selenocysteine) is produced from plants specially enriched with selenium. Iodine, according to them, is extracted from seaweed due to its natural rarity. Both trace elements are critical: iodine deficiency leads to serious health problems, including congenital defects and mental retardation, and selenium deficiency weakens the protection of cells from damage and disrupts the thyroid gland and other organs. In Russia, more than 80% of the population experiences a selenium deficiency that cannot be compensated for by other antioxidants. Sugar consumption reduces selenium absorption. For babies, nutrition containing an optimal combination of trace elements and vitamins is especially important.

It is important to monitor the iodine level not only in children and pregnant women, but also in adults. In most of the Russian Federation, there are insufficient levels of natural iodine in the soil, water, and food. In nature, iodine is rare, with the exception of seafood. It is accumulated by algae. Thus, 5 kilograms of iodine are obtained from one ton of kelp.

She has developed an environmentally friendly method for producing yogurt with increased nutritional value. The secret lies in enriching plants with selenium (in the form of selenomethionine and selenocysteine) by adding this trace element to water and fertilizers. Thanks to this, the resulting yogurt becomes more beneficial for health.

The yogurt contains: cow's milk, oatmeal, bacterial starter culture, natural honey, stabilizers, concentrated whey, and dried fruits (candied fruits and dried apricots).
