Yandex has announced the relaunch of its "Internet Meter" service for checking internet connection speeds. The updated version will feature new measurement technology and a redesigned interface. The service will be available in August.
The "Internet Meter" will use Yandex's CDN server network, located in various regions of Russia. This will allow measuring download and upload speeds, as well as determining ping (latency). Users will be able to find out technical data about their connection, including IP address, browser version, and screen resolution. The service will work on computers and mobile devices.
In the future, it is planned to add a statistics tracking function, a personal account for providers, and a mobile application. This will allow telecom operators to analyze the quality of their coverage.
Earlier in July, Roskomnadzor blocked the Speedtest by Ookla service, citing security threats. Some telecom companies are already using alternative solutions, such as QMS from Rostelecom. Representatives of VimpelCom and MegaFon welcomed Yandex's initiative, while MTS declined to comment.
A national-level speed tester is necessary regardless of blockages.
Experts note that Yandex has the technical capabilities for accurate measurements thanks to its developed CDN infrastructure. However, some experts point out that measurement results may differ for different services due to the peculiarities of network connections.
Russian internet users will have a convenient domestic service for measuring connection speeds. Unlike foreign counterparts, the "Internet Meter" is based on Russian infrastructure, which reduces the likelihood of blockages.
