The Central Design and Technological Institute (JSC "CPTI", part of Rosatom State Corporation) will rehabilitate the territories of two uranium legacy sites in the Sughd region of Tajikistan. This was reported by the press service of the state corporation.
The region is home to uranium deposits and mining and chemical plants that operated during the Soviet era. Some industrial sites contain dumps of rocks with elevated levels of radionuclides, as well as tailings dumps containing radioactive waste from the primary hydrometallurgical processing of uranium ores. The project includes the rehabilitation of a tailings dump in the village of Adrasman and a dump from workshop No. 3 at the "Taboshar" site in the Istiklol area.
The tailings dump in Adrasman covers an area of 3.45 hectares, its height is 22-25 meters, and the total volume of accumulated waste reaches 400 thousand tons. The dump of workshop No. 3 occupies about three hectares, and the project provides for the placement of contaminated structures of former industrial buildings and structures.
Rosatom specialists have already begun comprehensive engineering and radiation surveys, as well as the preparation of project documentation. All project decisions will undergo state urban planning and environmental reviews in accordance with the legislation of the Republic of Tajikistan.
The work will be carried out within the framework of an intergovernmental agreement between Russia and Tajikistan on cooperation in the rehabilitation of territories affected by uranium mining and mining industries. In the fall of 2023, Rosatom successfully completed the reclamation of the Taboshar industrial site, where the radiation background was reduced to a natural level.
Earlier www1.ru reported that Rosatom is eliminating a phenolic sludge pit in Ulan-Ude.
