Operable from -60°C to +120°C: Flexible polyamide PCB production technology developed in Russia

The boards are lightweight, elastic, and heat-resistant

Rosel Holding (part of Rostec) has presented a new technology for high-precision production of flexible polyamide printed circuit boards, which are used in the production of smartphones, tablets, medical equipment, robots, and specialized equipment. This was reported by the holding's press service.

Flexible printed circuit boards are made of special polymers — polyamides. They have a number of advantages compared to traditional fiberglass boards — lightness, elasticity, and heat resistance.

The development used a technology for fixing a flexible blank using auxiliary materials.

With this approach, the polyamide blank is located between two sheets. The bottom one is made of high-density fiberboard with a special coating, which forms a flat surface under the polyamide. Additional pressing of the polyimide is provided by the upper overlay aluminum sheet, which is placed above the blank. This approach guarantees drilling accuracy within 20-25 microns.

However, the high flexibility of the material creates certain difficulties in processing and high-precision drilling. This problem was solved at the Electropribor production association of the Avtomatika concern. Alexey Troshin, General Director of JSC PO Electropribor, noted that the company has successfully completed the development of technological processes that allow producing products ranging in size from 24x30 mm to 345x313 mm.

Such boards remain operational in the temperature range from -60°C to +120°C. Today, we produce double-sided polyamide boards of the 5th accuracy class, and in some technically justified cases, even with elements of the 6th accuracy class.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that a mini-factory for the production of printed circuit boards was created at RTU MIREA.
