Defense Minister Andrei Belousov instructed to systematize the experience of using military drones to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) into their control. According to experts, to successfully implement this idea, it is necessary to overcome serious technological barriers and provide sufficient data for AI training.
At a meeting on July 11, 2025, at the command post of the "Dnieper" group, the minister noted the importance of using the already accumulated experience of UAV operators. Based on this experience, it is planned to develop a hardware complex for controlling drones with AI elements. It should automatically analyze information from various types of drones and offer solutions in real time.
Despite the fact that some drone models with AI elements are already being tested, their number remains small compared to the thousands of manually controlled FPV drones. The main problem is that modern electronic components are not able to fully unlock the potential of AI in unmanned aviation. Existing technologies are too expensive and not suitable for mass production.
In addition, training military neural networks requires a large amount of high-quality video data, which is also a serious obstacle. Without sufficient data, AI will not be able to accurately identify targets and effectively control drones.
