The «Rosatom» State Corporation announced plans to launch the fifth power unit at the Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Plant. The physical and energy start-up of the new unit, equipped with a BN-1200M fast neutron reactor, is scheduled for 2033, and commissioning – for 2034.
The first stage of construction, related to the pouring of concrete, will begin in mid-2027. The new power unit will be an important step in the development of a two-component nuclear power system. It will ensure the closure of the nuclear fuel cycle and the possibility of using various types of nuclear fuel, including oxide and nitride based on uranium and plutonium.
The BN-1200M reactor will be the world's first serial fast neutron reactor and will continue the evolution of Russian «fast» reactors, such as BN-600 and BN-800, which are already operating at the Beloyarsk NPP. The new project will also open up opportunities for «afterburning» minor actinides and producing isotopes for medical and industrial needs, which emphasizes its importance for the future of nuclear power.
