On Friday, the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) scrambled two Eurofighter fighters to escort a Russian Il-20M aircraft detected over the Baltic Sea. The incident occurred in international airspace.
The Russian reconnaissance aircraft was detected by NATO radars at 09:02 local time (10:02 Moscow time). The fighters made visual contact with the Il-20M 100 km from the coast, after which the Il-20M changed course 40 km from the island of Usedom, without violating German airspace.
The Russian Ministry of Defense emphasized that all flights by Russian aviation are carried out in strict accordance with international rules.

Il-20 is a complex reconnaissance aircraft. It is equipped with a side-looking radar, radio intelligence and radio interception stations, and photographic equipment. The aircraft was produced from 1968 to 1976.
