Nuclear engineers have begun installing the third tier of the internal containment (IC) at the second power unit of the El Dabaa NPP under construction in Egypt. This was reported by the Rosatom press service.
The third tier of the containment consists of 12 "petal blocks" that were manufactured at the Egyptian construction site's production base. The blocks are 9 meters high and weigh between 40 and 100 tons.
The blocks will be installed in 2 weeks, then they will be joined into a single ring. The IC is part of a passive safety system that will prevent the release of radioactive materials into the environment in the event of an accident. It also helps protect the reactor during earthquakes and hurricanes.
