A Russian woman will receive compensation of almost one million rubles from the Ministry of Internal Affairs for negligence in the investigation of the theft of her car. The decision was confirmed in three court instances. The ruling in case No. 88-5140/2025 appeared in the open file cabinet of the Second Cassation Court of General Jurisdiction.
The events began in March 2003, when a woman bought a new VAZ-21102 in Moscow for 185 thousand rubles. In August of the same year, her car was stolen. The woman turned to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. A criminal case was opened.
The owner of the car repeatedly contacted the police, and the security forces claimed that the search for the car was ongoing. A little over 20 years later, police officers from the Tver region invited her to pick up the car from the impound lot.
It turned out that the stolen VAZ was found back in November 2003, but the woman was not notified about this. Over two decades, the sedan fell into complete disrepair. An examination established that it was scrap metal with a residual value of 18 thousand rubles.
As a result, the woman filed a lawsuit demanding to recover the cost of a new car (Lada Granta for 963 thousand rubles) and compensation for moral damage.
The trial lasted two years, and all three court instances supported the plaintiff's claims. The judges considered the compensation for moral damage in the amount of 100 thousand rubles to be excessive and awarded only 7 thousand rubles. Otherwise, the requirements were met: the Ministry of Internal Affairs was ordered to pay 963,764 rubles, taking into account the cost of scrap metal.
