The production of the Il-76MD-90A military transport aircraft is carried out at the "Aviastar" plant in Ulyanovsk. In 2024, the company reached a volume of six aircraft per year, and in 2025 — seven aircraft. The publication "Technosphere Russia" explained what prevents the production of, for example, 20 aircraft per year in Ulyanovsk today?
The authors recalled that the Soviet Il-76 and the modern Il-76MD-90A differ quite significantly. That is, Ulyanovsk did not just "transfer the production of the aircraft from Tashkent," but also deeply modernized it when it was launched into production.
The Il-76MD-90A received new domestic PS-90A-76 engines with a thrust of 14.5 tons each, a new wing design, a reinforced chassis, modified navigation and radio-electronic systems with the PrNPK "Kupol-III-76M(A)", an onboard defense system that protects against anti-aircraft missiles with jamming in the ultraviolet, infrared and laser ranges, as well as radar interference.
When the Il-76MD-90A production project started in Ulyanovsk, it was planned to produce 39 vehicles in just 8 years. This is despite the fact that the Russian aircraft industry had not been loaded with large volumes for many years before that, problems arose with component suppliers, personnel and the availability of necessary equipment.
In 2019, 3 serial Il-76MD-90A were handed over to the Russian military, in 2020 — another 3, in 2021 — 2 (a new assembly line was being set up this year), in 2022 — 5, in 2023 — 6, in 2024 — 6. At the beginning of 2025, we can safely say that 6 cars per year is the achieved level, this year there will be 7.
Earlier www1.ru reported that the timing for equipping Be-200 aircraft with Russian PD-8 engines has become known.
