The Russian Kornet-EM ATGM has surpassed Western counterparts due to a new control system that allows one combat crew to control three launchers of the complex simultaneously. This was written by military expert Boyko Nikolov in an article for Bulgarian Military.
The potential engagement of targets in three directions differs significantly from traditional ATGM operation schemes, where a combat crew operates with one launcher. The Kornet-EM with the new system enhances crew survivability and firing efficiency.
Nikolov suggested comparing the Russian ATGM with foreign counterparts-the American Javelin and the Israeli Spike.
The American Javelin, widely used by the military of NATO countries, operates on a "fire-and-forget" principle, allowing operators to launch the missile and seek cover. Thanks to its ease of use and portability, the complex is ideal for infantry, but it lacks the capabilities of the Kornet-EM.
The Spike ATGM, manufactured by the Israeli company Rafael, has two modes: "fire-and-forget" and "guided." According to Nikolov, this complex is "prohibitively expensive and complex." It is inferior to the cheaper and simpler Kornet-EM. Given this, the Russian development may find buyers in countries such as Algeria, India, and Serbia.
