Nuclear engineers have completed the installation of the main circulation pump units (MCPUs) in the reactor compartment of Akkuyu NPP Unit 2 in Turkey. This was reported by the press service of the Rosatom State Corporation.
The last of the four spherical casings was installed in the design position using a self-propelled crawler crane. The installation was carried out using Open Top technology (when equipment is fed through the open top of the reactor building).
Before installation in the design position, the equipment was delivered from the warehouse to a special area next to the power unit building, where specialists enlarged the unit by connecting it to the lower extension - a suspension element - and a biological protection ring.
Sergey Butskikh, CEO of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC, stated that the reactor vessel, steam generators, and hydro accumulators of safety systems have all been installed in their places. Workers will soon begin welding the main circulation pipeline to connect these components.
MCPUs provide forced circulation of the coolant in the primary circuit through the reactor core. The safety of any NPP directly depends on the operation of the pumps.
