Radiation instability was detected in Starlink satellites

Research is being conducted at the nuclear center in the city of Snezhinsk to improve the ability of electronic devices to withstand radiation. A vulnerability related to their sensitivity to dangerous radiation has already been discovered in the electronic components of the Starlink system.

Specialists from the Russian Federal Nuclear Center – All-Russian Research Institute of Technical Physics named after Academician E. I. Zababakhin (RFNC-VNIITF) – want to build new laboratories to learn more about the properties of various substances.

We will irradiate metals with an electron beam and study their properties at this point in time. Increasing the radiation resistance of electronics will improve the stability of the same space systems and avoid problems such as Space X with their Starlink.

The specialist drew attention to the fact that in the design of Starlink satellites, American engineers used electronic components that may fail under the influence of radiation.

In Snezhinsk, an accelerator with a direct viewing angle and a channel for radiation removal is used to conduct such complex experiments. This method allows you to accurately control the process and collect data on the behavior of materials.
