The Garage 54 YouTube channel team conducted an extreme experiment with a classic Lada. The aim of the experiment was to try to increase the engine compression to a record 22:1. This figure significantly exceeds the standard values, even for modern turbo engines, where compression rarely reaches 11:1.
To achieve this compression, the experimenters used an unusual approach — a layer of aluminum was welded onto the pistons, and the cylinder head was ground and an additional gasket was installed. This reduced the final compression to 16:1.
After assembly, the engine unexpectedly started and even allowed the car to move off, demonstrating impressive torque on the test bench. However, the experiment ended in failure — when shifting into second gear, the engine could not withstand the load, severe detonation began, with vibrations and shock loads.
As a result, the power unit literally fell apart.
