Trials of an innovative technology are starting in Russia, allowing the use of ordinary smartphones for calls and internet access via satellites. In mid-April, the State Commission on Radio Frequencies (SCRF) plans to allocate frequencies for testing this system.
Radio frequencies in the ranges of 1980–2010 MHz and 2170–2200 MHz for testing "satellite-smartphone" communication will be received by MTS. The tests will be conducted on sections of the hybrid satellite communication system 5G. The operator will have to provide information on the needs in frequencies and necessary regulatory measures by the third quarter of 2025.
Representatives of the "Megafon" company noted that the creation of hybrid mobile and satellite networks will be an important step in solving communication problems in hard-to-reach places. The successful functioning of this technology will require the deployment of a Russian group of low-orbit satellites.
Such communication will be especially useful in places where there are no cellular networks: in the Far North, along railways and highways, as well as in remote settlements.
