The Russian Aerospace Forces have begun to use crews of the fourth-generation Su-30SM multirole fighter with R-77-1 medium-range missiles to intercept low-signature kamikaze drones and patrol low-altitude areas of airspace. Footage of the aircraft equipped with these munitions appeared online.
The R-77-1 missile is equipped with an active X-band radar homing head ( seeker ) 9B-1103M-200PA/PS, as well as lattice aerodynamic rudders providing an angular turning rate of up to 150 deg./s. The range of the missile is up to 120 km.
The active seeker also enables the R-77-1 to intercept AIM-120D AMRAAM air-to-air missiles and MIM-104D/F surface-to-air missiles with an RCS of 0.07 - 0.1 m² in the forward hemisphere, provided that timely target designation is provided by the onboard radar systems N011M Bars-R and N035 Ibis-E.
